Quantifying Wide Area Tornado Damage with Planet Imagery

On-Demand Webinar

On December 10, 2021, in the late evening, deadly EF-4 and EF-3 tornadoes touched down in Kentucky, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Planet’s daily imagery captured the extent of the damage a few hours after the event. In this webinar, Planet Federal will demonstrate workflows that could aid in the response and recovery of tornadoes. Attendees will be shown how to identify the path and swath width of the tornado by applying simple geospatial techniques, and will go on to leverage FEMA’s structural data to quantify impact by estimating the number of affected structures. This same approach and workflow can be applied to a variety of natural disasters and emergency events.

Join Planet Federal to gain a better understanding of how Planet’s daily, ‘always-on’ satellite constellation provides analysts with a unique toolset to determine the scope of tornadoes and other natural disasters shortly after their impact to provide timely insights for emergency management.

In this webinar, you’ll learn:

  • The importance of ‘always-on’ monitoring to support disaster response
  • Applying normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and differencing the index pre and post event
  • How to combine various datasets with Planet’s data to quantify the impact of disasters
