Cloud-based raster analysis allows organisations to quickly understand changing water landscapes in Australia. Planet’s new Orders API is an effective way organisations can spend less resources and effort on data preparation, computation, and storage - enabling resources to be committed instead to supporting water and landscape decision-making.

In this session, you'll learn how, Geoplex developed Python Jupyter Notebooks using the new Orders API, which were run within Esri ArcGIS Pro, to identify PlanetScope 3m imagery within a month-long water inundation event over Toorale National Park in New South Wales. The script ran a geoprocessing workflow in the cloud calculating Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) from the identified imagery and clipping the result before downloading.

The results were compiled with other geospatial data into a labelled time series, and a GIF was generated to highlight the flow of water over the landscape. This output was generated without the need to set up internal processes, storage, or tools typically required to perform raster analysis on traditional high-resolution imagery sources. The dynamic, contextual nature of the output provided decision-makers with a clear understanding of a complex problem impacting multiple stakeholders.
