Combating Maritime AIS Manipulation with Satellite Data and AI Insights

Automatic identification systems, or AIS, is required to be carried and operated by large ships in over 200 seafaring countries since the signing of a United Nations maritime resolution in 2015. AIS is used to transmit a ship’s identity, location, speed, course, and more - allowing other ships to avoid collisions and law enforcement to track and monitor vessel movement.

However, as highlighted in a recent New York Times article, Windward - the leading Maritime AI platform - has uncovered over 500 cases in the past year of ships hiding their locations by manipulating their AIS data. “U.S. intelligence officials confirmed that the spread of AIS manipulation is a growing national security problem, and a common technique among sanctioned countries.”

Join Planet and Windward on Tuesday, October 25th to see how Planet’s high-cadence and high-resolution data, paired with Windward’s Maritime AI platform, enables you to easily identify behavioral and risk indicators at sea. We’ll demonstrate real examples in U.S. and international waters, focusing on the Caribbean and South America.
