The Planet Federal Innovation Sprint is an opportunity for analysts, researchers, technologists, and Earth lovers to use Planet’s terabytes of data and decade-long archive to address pressing real-life mission problems and social issues. Join us virtually for two full days on Thursday, January 26th and Friday, January 27th, 2023 to solve self-selected challenges leveraging Planet data around the central theme of climate resiliency.
Climate change impacts every single one of us. And since the Executive Order on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad was enacted in February 2021, over 20 U.S. government agencies have released Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plans to identify and address their most significant climate risks. Planet strives to be part of the solution, and with this event, we aim to provide an opportunity for government users to access Planet’s platform, data, and subject-matter experts.
This challenge aims to enable participants to think outside the box. It’s a chance to step back from your day-to-day and make time to concentrate on that problem you’ve been wanting to solve or that moonshot idea that might pan out to be something incredible.
What’s the theme of the event?
The focus of this innovation sprint is climate resiliency – more specifically, what satellite and remote sensing data can do in support of climate resiliency. As the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions puts it, “Climate resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or disturbances related to climate. Improving climate resilience involves assessing how climate change will create new, or alter current, climate-related risks, and taking steps to better cope with these risks.”
We encourage participants to select a topic surrounding climate resiliency they are passionate about. Here are a few ideas:
Who should participate?
Everyone from imagery and geospatial analysts to program managers, scientists, and those without any technical expertise - in short, no experience is necessary and all are welcome! Planeteers will provide support throughout the challenge to help participants decide on a topic, get access to the data they need, and understand how they can use it.
Do I have to have a Planet account to participate?
No. Prior to the event, we will provide credentials and host office hours to ensure participants can access everything they need.
How is the event structured?
We’ll use a combination of video streaming and chat to gather together over a two-day period. Work in teams or on your own to leverage Planet’s platform to observe and discover. Registered participants will be automatically added to a messaging board two weeks before the hackathon. Brainstorming, discussion, and team formation is encouraged to begin early.
Who can I contact if I have questions?
