Planet is proud to announce the Tanager™ Open Data Competition, an initiative to accelerate scientific discovery with hyperspectral imagery. We are looking for innovative minds to showcase what is possible when science-ready data meet real-world problems.

The Challenge. We are inviting researchers to put the Tanager Open Data Catalog into action and demonstrate the potential of hyperspectral data by highlighting an impactful use case, technical assessment, or a promising research direction.

Why Participate?

• Direct Support for Your Work: Three winning teams will work with Planet to directly influence the selection of thirty (30) Tanager images for release into Planet’s Open STAC catalogue, ensuring the data that matters most to the winner’s research becomes a public reality. This is a chance for winners to amplify the impact of their work on a global stage.

• Showcase Your Innovation: Winners will be recognized at AGU 2026 and may be featured across Planet’s scientific and marketing channels.

What We're Looking For
Your submission could take many forms, including:

• "Lightning" Case Studies: A short paper or presentation showcasing your analysis of a specific geographic area.

• Code & Scripts: A well-documented Jupyter notebook or GitHub repo showing a cool way to process or visualize Tanager for a specific use case.

• Technical Analysis: A brief assessment applying a published methodology to Tanager, or comparing Tanager’s performance to other hyperspectral sensors like EMIT or PRISMA.
